Purchase Considerations
When you're buying a new electrical appliance you should:

Buy for your needs - select a size that is most suited to your needs. A large model with the same star rating as a smaller model uses more energy and generates more greenhouse gas emissions.

Consider ongoing costs - don't just think about the purchase price - the installation cost and ongoing operation costs of a new appliance also need to be considered.

Check efficiency ratings
- ratings such as the star rating can help you select the most efficient appliance. Energy efficient appliances cost less to run and have less environmental impact than similar appliances with lower energy efficiency. Check out the energy ratings section on this website for more information.

Do your homework - organisations, such as the Australian Consumers Association, regularly undertake benchmark testing of products, including a full range of appliances. The results of these benchmark tests along with independent reviews and advice about products are published in the Association’s magazine Choice.
