Solar Cities is an Australian Government initiative designed to support a sustainable energy future in urban locations throughout Australia.
In September 2006, the Ergon Energy-led, Townsville-based consortium won the right to host a
Solar City project and will receive up to $15 million in funding from the Australian Government towards the $30 million trial.
The project will trial a range of initiatives that aim to conserve energy, increase solar energy usage and
cut greenhouse gas emissions by around 50,000 tonnes*.
Other members of the Townsville-based consortium are the Queensland Government through the Department of Mines and Energy, the new Townsville City Council, Delfin Townsville, HIG Riverway and Cafalo.
