Energy Sense Ideas

We were blown away by your response to our Energy Sense Competition with over 1,200 of you sending us your ideas - proof that saving energy is as important to you as it is to us. We'd like to congratulate our 20 randomly drawn winners.

It’s great to see so many of you using your energy sense and doing the simple things like turning appliances off at the wall, using the clothesline instead of the dryer and taking shorter showers.

Vote for your favourite!

What’s your favourite energy sense idea? We’ve posted some of our favourites so you can vote for the ones you like. These aren’t necessarily the most common suggestions or the biggest electricity savers but they do show some creative ways our customers are taking control of their energy use. And hopefully, they’ll inspire you to find new, fun ways to use your energy sense around the house. So get voting!

Possum

We use a stove top kettle (gas stove) and every Wednesday is no power night. We sit outside, use the BBQ and candles, watch the stars and spotlight possums. J. Herley, Geham

Air Conditioner

Family campouts in one room - that way we are running only one aircon at night and not three. Turning off the hot water system in summer. Turning off all unused power points at night. Just doing these simple things has resulted in a massive drop in our power bills. A. Henry, Richmond

Lighbulb

Use my clothes line instead of the dryer. Unplug all unused appliances. Switch off unnecessary lights and use energy saving bulbs. Make sure the kids and my husband don't stand in front of the fridge with the door open and go "hmm what do I want to eat?" and stand there for 5 min letting the cold air escape. J. Hunter, Emerald

Candles

It is my job to walk around the house to check that unwanted lights are switched off and that power points are turned off if not in use. No more standby on the TV, turn the switch off at the wall please. Sometimes we have candlelit dinners to save electricity for an hour. J. Williams, Gracemere

Cards

We have one family night a week without using any electricity. We play board games, cards and read books with the kids. They love it!! A. Mackie, Bundaberg

Coins

We have this deal that for every power switch the kids turn off, they earn 5 cents...it’s going great! K. Laidlaw, Bundaberg

TV

With a pre-school and preppy at home, I tell them that the TV needs a sleep after watching cartoons in the morning because they are so tiring. The TV is then off for most of the day and the kids are outside playing happily (until they get older and click on to it). C. Crichton, Ayr

Powerboard

Purchased new surge protection boards with on/off switches so now able to turn off multiple appliances by flicking one switch. Replaced power board for TV and entertainment unit with widow/slave surge protector power board. Turn off all unnecessary appliances. D. Lavender, Bucasia

Pool

I have changed my swimming pool pump from tariff 11 to tariff 33. This will use power at night and be cheaper. R. Mills, Dundowran Beach

Monitor

We have a Climate Smart monitor and each of our children has a competition to have the lowest usage total on “their” day. S. Black, Toowoomba
